Legal industry heavyweights join forces to attract the next-gen talent in the North West

Purpose-led independent law firm, Brabners, and global legal education provider, BARBRI, recently joined forces for an exclusive event designed to support talent attraction and retention in the North West’s legal sector.

The half-day event in Manchester saw representatives from leading law firms, and students from the University of Manchester, Edge Hill University, Liverpool John Moore’s University, the University of Birmingham and many more come together to hear about new, alternative pathways to qualification for aspiring solicitors. With over 80 delegates in attendance from school leavers to university graduates, industry experts offered career-ready advice and tips for entering the profession.

The legal profession is currently one of the least socioeconomically diverse sectors in the UK. However, with the introduction of a new assessment system (the Solicitors Qualifying Exam – SQE) and support from those across the industry, it is expected that this trend will change rapidly over the next few years.

Speaking of the event Lynette Smith, Brabners Senior Learning & Development Business Partner explained: “We were very proud to be involved in this event and to support new and alternative pathways into the legal profession. Purpose underpins everything we do, and we fully support the mission to diversify the legal profession by creating more accessible and flexible opportunities. Jakob Sexton, Brabners Early Careers Specialist added “We have a hugely talented population in the North West that we can all tap into, and I am immensely proud that we can work with providers, like Barbri, to upskill and educate the future of law.”

Robert Dudley, head of employability and engagement for BARBRI added: “There is a huge opportunity to develop legal talent from the ground up through the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), especially here in the North West.  This region is home to some of the top independent, national and international law firms and exceptional in-house teams. Whether they’re looking to implement legal apprenticeships for the first time, secure university graduates or even upskill existing team members, this is a real turning point in the way that legal teams will attract and retain their talent. It was fantastic to see so many organisations come together to embrace this.”
