The Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), introduced in 2021, offers a new pathway for legal professionals to qualify in England and Wales, the second largest legal system in the world and one commonly used in international arbitration cases and corporate contracts. Qualified lawyers outside of the UK are automatically exempt from the two-year Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) requirement, and South African lawyers can apply for exemption from the practical SQE2 assessment, leaving only the theoretical SQE1 assessment to be passed to be eligible to apply for qualification in England and Wales.
